A better alternative is the free version of BBEdit. If you’re using TextEdit, make sure you visit both TextEdit>Preferences and Edit>Substitutions and turn off Smart Quotes in both locations. However, by default TextEdit will change the necessary straight quotes to smart quotes, producing a file that Office will not recognize. You can create this in any text editor, including TextEdit in plain text mode (don’t try this with an rtf file).
